Pearlescent Paper Printing Considerations
Pearlescent paper is a type of specialty printing material, available in single-sided and double-sided varieties. It can be customized based on requirements such as quantity, color, grammage (weight), texture, and dimensions.
1. Characteristics
- Tensile Strength: Greater than or equal to 70N/15m.
- Folding Resistance: The product can withstand 180° double folds (first backward, then forward along the same crease) 20 times without cracking or damage (excluding products with a weight above 300gsm).
- pH Value: 8.0–9.5.
- Moisture Content: 4%–9%.
Applicable Uses
Pearlescent paper is commonly used for high-end brochures, books, exquisite packaging, boxes, greeting cards, and hang tags.
2. Features
Low Surface Energy: Poor ink absorption and adhesion
The smooth, layered structure formed by mica and titanium dioxide (or other metal oxides) contributes to the low surface energy of pearlescent paper. The smooth surface, essential for the pearlescent effect, makes it significantly harder for ink to adhere, absorb, and dry compared to regular coated boards.Pearlescent Surface Susceptibility:

3. Printing Methods for Pearlescent Paper
Offset Printing
Iridescent Paper is designed to showcase its luxurious, shimmering effect. Large areas of ink coverage can significantly reduce the pearlescent effect as it diminishes the reflective properties under the ink layer. Therefore, when designing the print layout, large solid-color patterns should be avoided. Instead, opt for simple lines, patterns, and text to emphasize the content while highlighting the paper’s brilliance.
Since the pearlescent particles are fragile, semi-finished products cannot withstand repeated handling or excessive friction. To mitigate this, production processes should be kept as short as possible, especially steps that involve significant manual handling.
- Where possible, use offset printing instead of screen printing.
- Use inline varnishing instead of offline varnishing, as varnishing can reduce the pearlescent paper’s luster.
Ink Printing
UV printing uses ultraviolet curing, where each printing unit is equipped with UV drying systems. UV inks dry almost instantly, ensuring they are completely cured before entering the next printing unit or the collection stage. To improve ink adhesion on Iridescent Paper, techniques such as increasing ink density and reducing ink viscosity can be employed. UV ink overlaying utilizes a “dry-on-dry” process to enhance print coverage and accuracy.
Printing Precautions
- Use quick-drying (volatile) inks.
- It is recommended to use volatile drying inks for printing and maintain a dot resolution of 135–150 dpi.
- Store in a humidity-controlled environment; avoid opening the packaging prematurely.
- Not suitable for direct-contact food packaging but acceptable for outer packaging.
4. Common Issues in Pearlescent Paper Printing
Ink Adhesion and Drying Issues: Low ink density on solid areas; Small dot loss; Slow drying, leading to smudges, dirt, and scratches on the reverse side.
Loss of Pearlescent Effect: White spots, uneven printing, creases, or other flaws during printing.
