Auxiliary lines indicating the final boundary of the printed product, used as a reference during cutting.
Resolution
The level of detail in an image, measured in DPI (dots per inch). The standard resolution for printing is typically 300 DPI.
Halftone Dots
Small dots of varying sizes used in printing to represent shades and textures of colors.
Vector Graphics
Graphics defined by mathematical formulas, which can be scaled infinitely without losing quality. Common formats include AI, PDF, etc.
Color Mode
RGB: The red, green, and blue color mode used for screen displays.
CMYK: The cyan, magenta, yellow, and black color mode used for printing.
Outline Fonts
Converting fonts to paths to prevent font display errors on different computers.

2. Printing Color-Related Terms

4-Color Printing
A printing method using the CMYK four-color ink system for mixing and printing, suitable for multi-color images.
Spot Color
A fixed color achieved by pre-mixed ink, often used for brand logos. The Pantone color system is a common standard.
Overprinting
A technique where one color is printed directly over another to enhance color or create special effects.
Knockout
A process where text or graphics are “cut out” using white or background color within an image.
Gradient
A smooth transition of color from one shade to another.

3. Printing Process-Related Terms

Offset Printing
An indirect printing method commonly used for large-volume printing.
Digital Printing
Printing directly from a digital file onto paper, suitable for small runs or personalized printing.
Screen Printing
A process where ink is transferred to the substrate through a mesh screen, suitable for special materials.
Foil Stamping
A process where metal foil is transferred onto the material using heat and pressure, adding a high-end effect.
Lamination
Coating the surface of the printed material with a thin layer of film (matte or gloss) to protect or enhance its texture.
Emboss/Deboss
Creating raised (emboss) or recessed (deboss) patterns on the material to add tactile dimension.
UV Coating
Applying a layer of transparent coating on the printed surface, which is cured with UV light, commonly used for spot high-gloss effects.

4. Material-Related Terms

Coated Paper
Paper with a smooth surface coated with a layer of coating, suitable for high-quality image printing.
Matte Paper
Paper with a non-glossy surface, suitable for print materials with more text content.
Kraft Paper
Naturally colored paper with a thicker texture, suitable for packaging or vintage-style designs.
Substrate
The material that holds the ink or design content, such as paper, plastic, fabric, etc.

5. Post-Press Processing Terms

Folding
The process of folding printed materials according to design specifications, such as folding in half or accordion folds.
Die-Cutting
Using a die (a custom-shaped metal mold) to cut printed materials into special shapes.
Binding
Saddle Stitching: Using staples to bind printed materials along the center fold.
Perfect Binding: Binding with glue along the spine, commonly used for books.
Punching
Drilling holes in printed materials for purposes such as binding or threading.

6. Printing Quality Control-Related Terms

Screen Angle
Refers to the angle at which halftone dots are arranged during printing. In four-color printing, each color typically has a different screen angle to avoid Moiré patterns.
Moiré Pattern
A disturbing pattern caused by overlapping or misaligned halftone dots. It usually requires adjusting the screen angle or resolution to avoid it.
Banding
The appearance of stripe-like patterns in gradient or large color areas, typically caused by resolution issues or uneven color transitions.
Color Shift
The color deviation between the design file and the printed product, which may be caused by color modes, device calibration, or ink characteristics.
Gray Balance
Adjusting the proportion of CMY (cyan, magenta, yellow) colors to ensure that the gray areas in printing do not show a color bias.
Registration
The process of precisely aligning different color inks on the printed product. Misalignment can result in a “registration error.”
Misregistration
The displacement of printed elements due to inaccurate registration or machine precision issues.

7. Color Matching-Related Terms

Color Management
The process of standardizing the color performance of devices (monitors, printers, presses) to ensure color consistency.
Pantone Color System (Pantone Matching System, PMS)
An international color standard system used for spot color printing, where colors are identified by a unique number to ensure precise color matching.
ICC Profile
A standardized file used to calibrate the color performance of different devices, ensuring color consistency and accuracy.
RGB to CMYK Conversion
The process of converting colors from the RGB mode (for screens) to the CMYK mode (for printing) in design, requiring calibration to minimize color loss or distortion.
Ink Density
The concentration of ink during the printing process, which directly affects the color saturation and clarity of the printed product.

8. Other Printing-Related Terms

Size Format
Refers to the dimensions of the printed material, such as full size, half size, quarto size, and octavo size, based on the size of the paper after cutting.
Imposition
The process of arranging multiple pages or designs on a larger sheet of paper for printing to improve efficiency, which are then cut into individual pieces.
Batch
Refers to the quantity of printed materials produced in a single printing run.
Long Run/Short Run Printing
Long Run Printing: Large volume printing, typically using offset printing to reduce the cost per unit.
Short Run Printing: Small volume printing, typically using digital printing to be more economical.
Rasterization
The process of converting vector graphics into raster (pixel-based) images to meet the requirements of certain printing devices.
Printed Sheet
A sheet of paper produced by a printing press, which may contain multiple pages or designs.

9. Printmaking Art Terms

Spot UV
Applying a UV coating to specific areas to enhance brightness or texture.
Cold Foil Stamping
A foil stamping process that doesn’t require heat, suitable for detailed metallic foil embellishments.
Heat Transfer
Using heat and pressure to transfer a design onto the surface of a material, commonly used for printing on clothing.
Plateless Printing
A printing technique, such as digital printing, where images are printed directly without the need for printing plates.
Special Printing
Refers to printing on special materials (such as metal, plastic, fabric, etc.) or using non-traditional techniques.

10. Printing Paper-Related Terms
