The Importance of Eco-Friendly Packaging: Why Choose Soy-Based Ink?

When customizing product packaging, environmental sustainability is a crucial factor to consider. More and more brands are seeking packaging solutions that minimize negative impacts on the planet. In addition to selecting eco-friendly packaging materials, using environmentally friendly ink—such as soy-based ink—is an excellent choice. But what exactly is soy-based ink, and why should we choose it?

Petroleum has long been a key ingredient in traditional ink production. However, during the late 1970s, an oil shortage led to skyrocketing prices. The American Newspaper Association recognized the need for a more reliable printing material. After testing over 2,000 types of vegetable oils, they found that soy oil provided the most stable and effective alternative to petroleum-based ink.

Compared to petroleum-based inks, soy-based ink significantly reduces the emission of volatile chemicals while addressing environmental, health, and safety concerns within the printing industry. The American Association has also set specific requirements for the soy oil content in inks: at least 10% in heat-set web offset ink, 20% in sheet-fed offset ink, 40% in foam ink, and 55% or more in newsprint ink.

Soy-based ink offers several advantages over traditional petroleum-based inks:

Vivid Colors and High Saturation – Compared to conventional ink, soy-based ink produces sharper and more vibrant images. It also has high transparency and rich color expression, making it ideal for large-scale color printing on packaging.

Eco-Friendly – The volatile organic compound (VOC) content in soy-based ink is as low as 0.8%, whereas petroleum-based ink contains around 4.6%. This means soy-based ink has a much smaller impact on air quality. Additionally, soy is a renewable resource with a short growth cycle and is naturally biodegradable, posing minimal environmental burden.

Easy to Recycle – During the recycling process, printed materials must go through a de-inking stage to ensure smooth processing. Studies have shown that soy-based ink is easier to remove than conventional ink, causing minimal damage to paper fibers. Furthermore, the residue left from soy-based ink is highly biodegradable, making wastewater treatment more efficient.

With its excellent stability and eco-friendly properties, soy-based ink is becoming increasingly popular in packaging printing. By choosing soy-based ink, brands can achieve high-quality prints while contributing to a healthier planet.
